• Expect change to be gradual. Take time to establish the relationship.
• Be consistent.
• Don’t over commit.
• Treat your mentee as an equal but establish boundaries.
• Encourage them to find their own solutions and take responsibility for their actions.
• Show them how to give themselves power to overcome and achieve (in a way that is not at another’s expense).
• Recognise your limits and pass on issues or matters that are beyond your experience or involvement to the school or to ReachOut managers.
• You are not an expert but you might know someone who is to whom you can refer your mentee.
• Just be yourself!
