Mentors are guides who freely offer their support, encouragement, life experiences, enthusiasm and belief in the young people they mentor. This creates value and believe in themselves, growth in confidence, forms good habits, teaches them how to face problems, find solutions and make the most of the learning opportunities open to them, discover their talents and aim to be the best they can be.
A good mentor can be a coach, a facilitator, a counsellor, and a networker but they are always a good listener. When someone really listens attentively to what you say, you feel that you matter. For a young person who is not always listened to by adults this can make a huge difference in their lives.
A good mentor encourages, helps and supports another person in meeting and overcoming challenges, problems and barriers. They also offer the benefit of their life experiences in a positive way to encourage the mentee to approach and address a range of new learning experiences with confidence.
A good mentor shows enthusiasm, patience, an interest and desire to help their mentee. They are positive, reliable, realistic, relaxed, friendly and responsive.
