Language mentors project
Project Summary: Children new to the UK are expected to learn English quickly so that their education can continue, but many don’t receive enough support and fall behind. ReachOut! Language Mentors turn this around by supporting children in lessons and helping them understand what is going on around them. Languages required are; Swahili, Portuguese, French, Polish and Lithuanian.
- Time: Monday mornings from 9-30 am to 12-30 pm
- Duration: mid-October to mid-May
- Location: Ss. John Fisher and Thomas More R.C. Primary School, Woodhouse Lane Benchill M22 9NW.
- Age of mentees: 5 to 11 years old (Yrs 1-6)
- Volunteers required: 10 male and female volunteers
- Transport is provided from the ReachOut! office.
We are currently looking for mentors who are willing to drive themselves and other mentors to the project. We will pay petrol expenses, and drivers will be able to sign up as a priority before other people. Please email Hannah to find out more.
Criteria for joining this project: You will need to:
- Be able to commit to attending 90% of sessions or more
- Register as a mentor and EMAIL HANNAH. (You cannot sign up automatically for this project)
- Complete our in-house training course (accredited if you choose). The training for the language mentors at St John's will take place over two sessions from 5-30 pm to 7-30 pm on Thursday 20th October and Thursday 27th October. - Satisfy Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) Disclosure criteria (for more details on the CRB process use the link on the sidebar menu to the left)
- Sign up to the ReachOut! Mentoring Agreement* (when you register)
