This is the Archive Review PageArchived 7 May 2009ReachOut! Fundraising week in ManchesterThis was a fantastic success and nearly £1500 was raised over the course of the week. Thank you to all the volunteers (student mentors, Manchester Leadership Progamme Volunteers and mentee volunteers) for supporting us so enthusiastically and giving up your time so readily. Watch out for some photographs of the fundraising shortly! ReachOut! Fundraising week in ManchesterFrom Tuesday 28th April – 4th May we’ve got a whole host of activities for you. What’s more, there’ll be fun, frolics and much banter all whilst fundraising to keep your favourite mentoring organisation going! This is an exciting chance for you to make even more of a difference to ReachOut! Help us expand into more schools, with more projects, plus e-learning, soccer tournaments, summer projects, educational trips and interesting sessions for the young people YOU work with!
As you know, your weekly mentoring sessions are drawing to a close, so what better way to end the projects than by getting together with everyone? All fundraising is to allow more student volunteers the chance to be a part of ReachOut! This year over 500 people wanted a piece of what you’ve experienced with us so please, please, PLEASE help us to expand and improve what we do. It would be great if EVERYONE (past, present and future volunteers of ReachOut and friends) put themselves up for at least one of these activities! All activities (except bagpacking slots) are flexible so if you’ve got lecture clashes we can work something out. Check out the week’s schedule by clicking here and email Andrea to sign-up to one (or more) of these activities. ReachOut! will be providing transport, entertainment and big rewards for those who help (you know us, always in the form of food!) Sign-up your friends too, the more the merrier! Comic Relief have nothing on us….see the picture below!

ReachOut! trip to the Houses of Parliament April 2009
An intrepid group of Junior Mentors from Parklands High School in Wythenshawe started their day at 5 a.m. on Wednesday 29th April to travel to Westminster to visit the Houses of Parliament and meet with their local M.P. Paul Goggins. This followed on from a successful project they had completed earlier when, with support from their own student mentors, they each prepared for and presented a briefing to their own "Prime Minister" on issues they were interested in. A tour of the Palace of Westminster was followed by the meeting with Mr Goggins, fresh from attending the real Prime Minister's Question Time. The group asked a number of perceptive questions which Mr Goggins answered fully and frankly, which greatly impressed the group. For all concerned especially for those who were visiting London for the first time it was an interesting visit and helped the Junior mentors to understand the role of politicians in the local and National Community. Mr Goggins promised to support the Junior mentors as much as he could. Verdict? A "safe guy!" The event was the launch of a new initiative where over 100 public appointment ambassadors from different backgrounds, ages and all with a wealth of experience, use their skills and confidence to promote the plea lead by Bonnie Greer and the Minister, Maria Eagle to increase diversity and attract more talented people to apply for a public appointments. Reanna and Frances talked to ambassadors, who explained the benefits of taking up public appointments. These appointments are local, regional and national and cover bodies which make decisions that effect people’s every day lives, such as NHS Trusts, Magistrates, the Equality and Human Rights Commission. ReachOut! spoke to Bonnie Greer along with other ambassadors about their roles, why they took up being active in public life, and the difference they are able to make. Bonnie Greer gave an inspirational speech sharing her experiences; as a child in the US, Greer had to travel far to get to school (due to racial segregation), it was several years before she and other ethnic minorities were able to attend the local, previously, 'white only school'. Later in life whilst pursuing a career in Law, Greer was told by a professor at University that women didn’t belong there, so she changed direction. Fortunately these barriers did not affect her goal and she is now a successful playwright and a member of the British Museum’s Board of Trustees, where she is leading the way for black women in public appointments. Reanna and Frances were shocked by Greer’s stories, surprised that inequality was so entrenched in Greer’s upbringing but also inspired and encouraged that she had overcome these barriers, reminding us how worthwhile ReachOut!’s mission to promote a culture of respect for others, no matter what our differences, as well as to encourage and motivate the young people we work with to excel and achieve their ambitions is! Frances commented that “Reanna and I both enjoyed our first experience at Lancaster House and hearing from such inspirational people; which provided us with real insights, entertainment and inspiration, all topped off with some delicious canapés!” ReachOut!
