Case Study: Tshepo

image

Tshepo goes to St John’s Primary School in Wythenshawe. ReachOut! have worked with St John’s for several years; it is a school where 25% of children have English as an additional language and where eligibility for free school meals is high (Ofstead 2010). Tshepo is in Year 3 and was referred to us as he needed help concentrating and recognising words and sounds from text.

“It’s so much fun mentoring Tshepo” says his mentor, Maeve, who studies at the University of Manchester. Tshepo agreed, saying that mentoring gave him energy and strength for his learning, as well as making it exciting. He told us “I want to do it everyday!”

Support us!

We are a voluntary mentoring programme. Today each week, hundreds of children and young people in London and Manchester have a two hour, one on one mentoring session with a young adult. The children come from inner city areas, from socially and economically deprived neighbourhoods. Some are at risk of exclusion.
