Manchester-ReachOut! Football and Mentoring Academy
Venue to be confirmed.
This new project is aimed at boys aged 10-13 and will take place every Saturday between 11 am and 2 pm.

This year sees the exciting introduction of a new ReachOut! Football Mentoring Academy in Manchester.
Modelled on the successful ReachOut! Football Academy in Hackney, London, this exciting project combines academics with Manchester boys’ love of football. Boys will receive help in Maths and English, as well as structured, qualified football coaching (with a view to entering local football competitions).
It will primarily involve boys from Moss Side with whom we have been working over a number of years, but also boys from Wythenshawe and North Manchester. We aim to have 50 boys involved in total. In addition, young people aged 15 to 18 from Moss Side and Wythenshawe (Junior Mentors) will help in the running of the project.
How will be each session work?
At the start of each session, the boys will be split into two groups. One of the groups will receive football coaching and drills, while the other group will receive help in Maths and English. After a period, the two groups will then swap activities.
The session will finish with everyone coming together for a round of football matches.
Nature of the Project
Mentoring on this project is guaranteed to be one of the most rewarding experiences of your university life.
The project is not for the faint hearted – yes, at times the boys will be challenging and since the project is on Saturday mornings it will require a high level of commitment and dedication from volunteers.
However, the boys and Junior Mentors involved on the project will make it a lively affair – they love football with a passion and have a wicked sense of humour.
The young people possess incredible potential, talent and skill. They have not always had the channels to develop this in the past, but with your help we can change that!
Start date: As soon as possible after October half term (school).
Age of Mentees: 10 to 13
Duration: 3 hrs plus 20 minutes transport each way.
Transport: All mentors are provided with free transport leaving from the Greygarth Hall, 1 Lower Park Road. map
Criteria for joining this project:
This project is for male volunteers only so as to provide male role models. If there is a demand for a similar project for girls we will review this.
12 places are initially available.
Because the sessions rotate between academics and football, we need:
4 committed volunteers to co-ordinate the football drills session with the assistance of the Junior Mentors
8 volunteers to help with the Maths and English.
You will have to register as a mentor (to register click on the "Register" button on the sidebar to the left of this page).
You will need to satisfy the following criteria:
For the football coaching; an FA accredited qualification is desirable. You are welcome to attend the mentor training but for coaches this is NOT compulsory.
For the academic volunteers;
Attending one of the two training options organised by ReachOut!
Both sets of volunteers will have to satisfy Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) Disclosure criteria. When you log in (use the Log In button on the sidebar to the left) after registering as a mentor you can follow the progress of your CRB application in your "home area." You can follow the navigational links to check how many places are still available for this project and if there are places still available, sign up for this or other projects.
You will need to have read our Mission statement which sets out our overall objectives and sets out the values which are fundamental to the project and the relevant ReachOut! policies and procedures. You will declare that you have read all these documents.
You will have to have (digitally) signed up to our Mentoring Agreement.
