Plant Hill is soon to be transformed into The Co-operative Academy of Manchester. Positive change is in the air and three projects are running here this year in preparation for the big switchover and to continue the good work mentors did last year.

Girls made this ReachOut project what it is and they will continue to do so! Last year saw mentors take being a role model to the next level by helping the girls to customize their own clothes and plan a Fashion Show. Our aim was to boost confidence and after a trip to a Climbing Centre the girls couldn’t wait for more adrenalin, the sky really was the limit! Some weeks we’ve got up to all sorts of dramatic antics, trust building activities, lifeskills challenges and tackled moral dilemmas. It will be more of the same this year we’ll hit the ground running!

The Boys project will be taking on male students in a battle of wills and bravado! The challenge is to help these young males regain interest in education and set their heart on a great future for themselves. After this heavy stuff it will be down to the Football pitch to play for all you’ve got and let off some steam!

During the personal mentoring time, the boys and girls have a chance to talk, not only about academic problems, but also about personal worries or concerns in an environment where they can be sure of a sympathetic ear and complete confidentiality. The project co-ordinator is on hand to offer any advice or solutions to any problems and to access the relevant resources that may be required.

If it is leading by example you’re after try the Homework Club. It sees year 7 children being helped out by Year 11 students with University mentors setting the standard. After some group games and homework it’s time for us all to bond as team with sports and some weeks even dance!

These projects will be a steep learning curve for all involved in the projects, but facing these challenges will make you all the wiser. Go mentors!
