*Please note: Children in years 1 to 3 are generally too young to form a mentoring relationship. You will be more of a "parent" or "teacher" when working with these children and will not have the same sort of "equal" relationship you can have with the older children. You will NOT be required to undergo mentoring training to work on these projects but you should contact Andrea McDermott to let her know you want to try these projects and she will update your profile to enable you to sign up.

"St Marys is an outstanding school which operates in challenging circumstances. Pupils thrive in its extremely nurturing atmosphere and parents have great confidence that the school values their children and keeps them safe. 'This school is a dream come true', and, 'We are all part of one family', are typical of the comments made by parents and carers. The key to its success is the uncompromising search for improvement driven by the inspirational leadership of the headteacher. Staff know they are valued and have a genuine say in school improvement. Leaders have a determination and passion to raise pupils' self-esteem and achievement, and to improve the way they carry out their own work. As a result, pupils have strong self- belief and staff have very high expectations of just how well pupils can do. This has led to a year-on-year rise in standards."

Just part of the OFSTED report of June 2009 which well describes the progress made by St Mary's over the past few years. The proportion of pupils eligible to claim free school meals is very high at almost five times the national average. Most pupils are Black British and the proportion of pupils from other ethnic backgrounds is well above average. A significant proportion of pupils are refugees and asylum seekers. Only a third of pupils speak English as their first language. A well above average proportion of pupils joins and leaves the
school throughout the school year. The percentage of pupils with learning difficulties and/or disabilities is well above average.
So if you are up for a challenge but in a school that is a model for others St Mary's is the ReachOut! project for you.

See the whole OFSTED report here.

This project offers the most scope for mentors to get involved in a number of mentoring activities across the school. Whether it's helping Year 1 children with their reading or working with Year 6 as they prepare for their SAT's and the transition to High School there should be something to suit everyone. The school is very pleased with the ReachOut! mentors who have helped over the past 6 years and they are willing for mentors to come in to school every day.

  • Start date: As soon as possible after October half term (school).

    Age of Mentees: 7-11

Duration: 2 hours + 15 minutes transport each way.

Transport: All mentors are provided with free transport leaving from the Whitworth Art Gallery. map

    Criteria for joining this project:

19 places are initially available, up to 4 for each afternoon in the week, although 2 places only are guaranteed for each day. More places may be available on Thursdays or Fridays so if your first choice of project is full it could still be worth your contacting us to see if further places are available.

You will have to register as a mentor (to register click on the "Register" button on the sidebar to the left of this page).

You will need to satisfy the following training criteria:

Attending one of the two training options organised by ReachOut!* not applicable for the Years 1-3 project. See above.

You will need to satisfy Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) Disclosure criteria. When you log in (use the Log In button on the sidebar to the left) after registering as a mentor you can follow the progress of your CRB application in your "home area." You can follow the navigational links to check how many places are still available for this project and if there are places still available, sign up for this or other projects.

You will need to have read our Mission statement which sets out our overall objectives and sets out the values which are fundamental to the project and the relevant ReachOut! policies and procedures. You will declare that you have read all these documents.

You will have to have (digitally) signed up to our Mentoring Agreement.
