Manchester- Xaverian College Volunteering Project

Address: Lower Park Road MANCHESTER M14 5RB

18 places are initially available but only for mentors from Xaverian College.

The Xaverian College Volunteer Programme is being formed to give students the opportunity to volunteer their time in the wider community. The College has a healthy track record of charitable giving, and in partnership with ReachOut!, is set to extend its commitment by encouraging students to commit their time and talents to people who will benefit. In return, students will gain in confidence, people skills, and awareness of social issues. In addition, they will have many rewarding experiences, and get to know fantastic people who they wouldn’t normally get the chance to meet!

Volunteers will be matched initially on basis of preference in one of three settings. The duration of each project is 1-2 hrs per week plus 5-10 minutes transport each way. All mentors are provided with free transport leaving from Xaverian College.

St Joseph’s Care Home

Times: Weekdays from 12 noon

A home for the elderly, run by the Little Sisters of the Poor, St Joseph’s is currently home to over 50 residents who are vulnerable financially and/or medically. They are cared for by round the clock nursing and care staff as well as the sisters themselves. The atmosphere is welcoming and friendly, and the residents are well attended to. Each day they have ‘animation’ time which enables them to exercise, play games, do arts and crafts…Some residents, however, are bed bound and unable to socialise. Students will have the choice of aiding group activities, serving dinners, or befriending a resident. Residents always appreciate a friendly young face and are guaranteed to make it worth your while!

Divine Mercy R.C. School

Weekdays

A Catholic primary based in Moss Side which has already forged positive links with ReachOut! Some pupils may need help with Numeracy and Literacy, others with SATs preparation. However, the school is keen to invite students with particular interests that they can pass on to the children, such as: languages, art, etc. This is great for anyone interested in working with children, or in education.

Cornerstone Day Centre

Mondays/Wednesdays/Thursdays all day, and Tuesday afternoons

Well known for its friendly welcome and good facilities, Cornerstone really is building block in our community for people who are homeless, vulnerable, and experiencing a whole range of difficulties. Students would be adding to a team of volunteers who attend on a regular basis to help serve food and drinks, to run free facilities for clients, and to talk to clients who drop in for a cuppa and some company. This place would not run without the strength of its volunteers and they always need more!
