Job Description

This is a really exciting opportunity for someone to come in and set the comms strategy of an incredible charity at an important time in its journey. ReachOut has grown in size and stature over the last two years, with a growing reputation for doing great work helping young people build character and go on to a better future.

The Comms & Marketing Manager will play a key role in the next phase of the charity’s expansion and telling our story. They will have the freedom to create and implement a communications strategy to expand and diversify our pool of potential volunteers and encourage them to sign up to mentor, and they will also work with the fundraising team in a communications capacity to find the best way to get our message out there and increase income streams. While this is an important and strategic role, as a small organisation it’s crucial that all applicants are happy to be hands-on

Based in our buzzing Dalston office, the Comms & Marketing Manager will report to the Chief Executive directly.  They will also work extensively with all parts of the organisation, with a strong focus on supporting the Senior Leadership Team to achieve ReachOut’s strategic priorities.

Main areas of responsibility

Strategy and Planning

  • Develop and maintain an ongoing communications strategy and timeline to help achieve ReachOut’s strategic objectives, with a focus on recruiting volunteers and increasing funding.
  • Proactively identify and maintain strategic promotional opportunities and partnerships for ReachOut.
  • Ensure that all communications activities are delivered on time, within budget and in line with ReachOut’s mission and culture.

Marketing and Branding

  • Appoint and manage external design agencies/freelance support as appropriate to create high quality resources and materials such as online adverts, recruitment flyers, posters, reports etc.
  • Produce our annual Impact Report, working alongside the Programmes Director and Operations team.
  • Act as the brand guardian for ReachOut, ensuring that we are correctly credited across all marketing / press materials and that our message and branding are consistent.
  • Collect, produce and collate documentary materials across all projects that key stakeholders will engage with, including photos, videos, quotes, case studies, blogs, relevant news articles and reports, impact stats, etc.
  • Manage the delivery of all ReachOut’s outgoing communications, both online and print, including social media, digital newsletter, invitations, annual review / brochure, posters, flyers, branding / signage.

Public Relations

  • Develop and deliver effective PR campaigns to help ReachOut to recruit more volunteers and increase funding.
  • Build relationships with local journalists and media outlets to deliver local press coverage across all ReachOut projects
  • Identify and bring on board appropriate patrons who can help to raise ReachOut’s profile.
  • Commission and manage PR agencies as required to ensure our ReachOut and our projects receive excellent coverage across local and national media channels

Relationship Management

  • Work with the Project and Fundraising Teams to ensure that key stakeholders and funders are keep up to date with communications activities relating to appropriate projects
  • Assist in securing and managing media partnerships for appropriate projects.

 Evaluation

  • Evaluate the success of ReachOut’s communications and ensure this feeds into our strategic objectives.

General Duties

  • Carry out other duties as required by ReachOut.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work to cover events such as our Impact Report Launch or the Hackney Half Marathon.
  • Act in a manner that is in keeping with ReachOut’s values.

Personal Specification

Essential Experience:

  • A minimum of five years of experience working in communications or marketing role
  • Experience of raising the profile of a small or new organisation
  • Excellent contacts and experience of developing relationships with key stakeholders, influencers and members of the press, ideally within the education sector
  • Experience of working with content management systems and digital marketing platforms including Wordpress. Mailchimp and social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Vimeo)

Essential Skills and Knowledge:

  • The ability to manage key stakeholder relationships
  • A clear understanding of how to grow the online reach of an organisation
  • The ability to write effectively for a range of different audiences
  • Knowledge of Photoshop and InDesign
  • Highly organised and able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Proactive and can use initiative to find solutions to problems
  • Has the ability to adapt and learn
  • Positive, energising and adopts a “can do” mentality
