The Director of People will have strategic responsibility for recruitment and development of all people working at ReachOut, including staff and volunteers. They will manage a team dedicated to delivering this vision and work closely with the CEO and Programmes Director to ensure we have great people delivering the best possible service to our beneficiaries. Key Responsibilities: Work with the SLT & Board to deliver ReachOut’s Strategic Plan for 2019 – 2023 in line with our mission. Work with the SLT & Board to develop and promote ReachOut’s organisational culture. Create and own our strategy for recruitment and retention of high calibre people throughout the organisation, ensuring ReachOut has the right staff to achieve our objectives. Lead on developing talent within our organisation and succession planning for key roles Create and own our strategy for volunteer recruitment, with a focus on transforming how we recruit university students. Create and deliver a strategy for ReachOut to become a networking organisation. Represent the organisation at internal and external events. Prepare papers for the Board and attend Board meetings every other month in the evenings. Line Management Line manage a team of staff across two locations to deliver ReachOut’s objectives Ensure their training and development needs are met and they are performing in line with agreed goals. Networking Organisation Create and deliver a strategy for ReachOut to become a networking organisation, connecting our young people to the people and opportunities that will help them with their careers. Actively engage our volunteer alumni and mentee alumni (ReachOut Ambassadors) to create a network of support for both groups of stakeholders. Build relationships that bring connections to ReachOut and our young people, both in the workplace and education. Plan and implement a calendar of engagement events. Staff Recruitment and Management Oversee all recruitment and management processes, such as Preparation of Job Descriptions and Person Specifications Advertising roles, screening and interviewing potential candidates Safer recruitment processes Contract preparation Inductions for new staff and trustees Training and development programmes Appraisal processes Grievance and disciplinary procedures Annually review the Employee Handbook, ensuring it is fit for purpose, compliant with relevant laws and regulations, and reflects best practice in the industry. Lead work on the ReachOut Leadership Programme, for recruitment, training and development of over 65 part time Project Leaders across all regions. Regularly review organisational policies and ensure they are up to date. Volunteer Recruitment and Management Create a strategy to ensure ReachOut recruits good quality volunteer mentors to fill all places at our projects. Oversee implementation of the strategy by the Volunteer Officers in each location. This includes: Recruiting approximately 1000 volunteers each year. Volunteer screening, training and inductions. Management and support of volunteers Collating feedback through surveys and focus groups to help us improve our volunteering experience. Retention of volunteer mentors year on year. Maintaining best practice standards in volunteer management. Developing people Create and own our strategy for development and retention of high calibre people throughout the organisation. Identify talent within organisation and development pathways for high quality staff and volunteers. Implement systems to improve retention of talent. Review pay structure and benefits package. Review appraisal processes, ensuring they are fit for purpose and reflect best practice in the industry. General Duties Carry out other duties as required by ReachOut. Occasional evening and weekend work as required. Travel to the Manchester Office to support the Manchester Volunteer Officer approximately once a month. Contribute actively to ReachOut’s culture of safeguarding young people. Act in a manner that is in keeping with ReachOut’s values. Report to the Board of Trustees as required. Personal Specification Knowledge and Experience Degree qualified or equivalent experience in analysis and report writing CIPD qualified or equivalent HR/management qualification / experience Considerable leadership experience of designing, delivering and evaluating people strategy, plans and budgets aligned to organisational strategy Significant experience in a generalist HR management role Track record in delivering people projects supporting organisational change and development Demonstrable up-to-date working knowledge of current employment legislation, policies, practices and procedures and experience of implementing policy and process improvements Demonstrable experience of providing high quality advice to leaders, managers and staff Excellent leadership and management skills: experience of leading small teams Experience working in the charity sector or a willingness to learn Skills and Attributes Excellent interpersonal, relationship management and communication skills, with evidence of having set clear direction and delivered results, through effective management of people. Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail, with evidence of having worked collegially at senior management or Board level to deliver goals/objectives. Flexibility: the ability to adapt to a changing, growing organisation and be self-motivated. A team player who can fit into our hardworking but passionate and friendly team.
