ReachOut Named as a Legacy Partner for Chance UK

ReachOut has been selected as one of five Legacy Partners for Chance UK, following their recent announcement that they will be closing after more than 25 years of vital work supporting children and families across the UK.

Over the last 30 years, Chance UK has delivered evidence based mentoring, group programmes and school workshops that have supported children to build confidence, resilience and healthy relationships. Their commitment to early intervention and helping young people develop essential emotional and social skills closely reflects our own work at ReachOut, where we support young people constrained by circumstance to strengthen their socioemotional skills, grow their confidence and support them take hold of the opportunities available to them.

As a Legacy Partner, ReachOut has joined Futuremen, Caudwell Youth, Family Action and Advance Charity in ensuring that Chance UK’s learning, tools and insights continue to benefit children and young people nationwide. This partnership is not a transfer or continuation of Chance UK’s services. Instead, it represents a responsible and thoughtful sharing of knowledge, enabling each organisation to explore how elements of Chance UK’s approach may be ethically and proportionately adapted within their own existing work.

Through the legacy process, we have received access to programme manuals, group‑work resources, training materials and evaluation tools, alongside opportunities for our team to learn directly from Chance UK’s practitioners. We are looking forward to bringing these resources and learnings forward into our own work at ReachOut to strengthen our own practises and continue to deliver high-quality support for young people.

We are grateful to Chance UK for generously sharing their expertise and sector knowledge. We are sorry to see such an impactful organisation close, and we deeply appreciate the significant contribution they have made to the youth sector over the past 30 years.

A note from our CEO, Ben Hilton

‘After more than 30 years of working alongside children, families, schools and partners, Chance UK has now come to the end of its journey. As part of closing Chance UK responsibly, I’m proud that ReachOut has been selected as one of their legacy partners to ensure that learning from their work continues to inform practice beyond their closure. At an incredibly difficult time for all involved, I have been so impressed with the process they went through to select their legacy partners and their sharing of resources and learning. Our team have already started to think through how we can incorporate their learning and practice into our work and I look forward to seeing how our offer adapts with this insight’

“At first, I was really hesitant to take on the Project Leader role, despite having mentored with ReachOut. However, with the support of the team I’ve really developed my skills. For example, at the Mentee Graduation, I stood up in front of 200 people and presented an award which is something I would never ever have been able to have done before, and isn’t an opportunity I could gain in my other situations.”

“Being able to spend the summer working at Rede Partners, was an amazing experience. Whether it was working in HR or Finance, I learned so much about the world of private equity, made great connections with fantastic people and I got to learn first-hand what it would be like to work there! I really believe that I can go onto build the career I want now I’ve been a part for a workplace for real”

Victor Adekunle, 18 years old, ReachOut Ambassador, London

“When I first my mentee, she was very reluctant to participate in the sessions. Now, I see a completely different person! Her confidence has grown and she is happy to join in! She still has some self-doubt when it comes to academic work, but that’s what I hope to help her overcome, because she is a very bright person!

Through mentoring, I’ve learnt I’m a lot more patient than I realised. There will be days where she refuses to participate and those are the days that I really see the importance of the character strengths, for both the mentees and the mentors. It also makes it easier for the mentee to understand the character strengths, when I use them myself”

“There are more distractions than ever outside of school, and the commitment of our students to attend ReachOut sessions is testament to the value they place on the relationships they foster there, and the challenge and enjoyment they provide.

ReachOut’s focus on communication skills and character development has become an important aspect of our provision of support for these students. The opportunity to relate to a positive role- model other than their usual teachers is key to the programme’s impact, and the evidence of this has been seen in the students’ attendance, resilience and to their overall progress across all the subjects in the school.”

Thomas Janvrin, Assistant Vice Principal at the Petchey Academy London
